NDC Applauds Lower House’s for Passage War Crimes Court Resolution

— Calls on the Senate to act in the affirmative

Hours after majority members of the House of Representatives of the 55th National Legislature unanimously voted on a resolution to establish the War & Economics Crimes Court in Liberia; the NDC, Liberia's only social democratic party with no uncertainty has commended members of the House of Representatives for what it describes as nationalistic decisions intended to bring relieve to victims of the war.

According to a statement signed by Peal Nyenkan and Ciapha Saah M. Gbollie, the NDC’s National Secretary General and National Chairman, respectively, NDC believes that the establishment of the court will end the culture of impunity for individuals who committed human rights abuses, including atrocities during the civil wars that ended in 2003.

The group acknowledges “intermittent but limited attempts” by past regimes of the Liberian government “to establish such specialized court despite calls from national and international human rights bodies to investigate and prosecute individuals who allegedly committed heinous crimes during the nation’s civil unrest as well as those who also committed economic crimes during and after the civil war in Liberia.”
