Liberia: National Lottery Authority Identifies a Group of 77

— Donates food and non-food items

The National Lottery Authority of Liberia on Monday, March 4, 2024, donated food and non-food items to the group of 77 on Newport Street in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia.

The items included 125 bags of rice and other essential materials used for cooking and laundry.

The Director General of the National Lottery Authority Reginald Nagbe said the gesture is based on a request from the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung on behalf of persons living with disabilities residing at the Group of 77 and its centers.

Nagbe told reporters covering the donation exercise that his entity also caters to more than one hundred and forty disabled communities throughout Liberia, including the National Union of People with Disabilities and disabled students at higher learning institutions.

The National Lottery Authority Director General also said that, as part of their empowerment package, they give out grants to disabled people to improve their lives.

On the donation to the Group of 77, Reginald Nagbe clarified that it is intended to be distributed by the Office of the Second Lady to benefit the three centers of the Group of 77, located at Newport Street, Monrovia Virginia, in Brewerville and Todee in Margibi County.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the Second Madam Synleseh Dahn Koung to handle the distribution and exercise transparently.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Second Lady, Dr. Macdonald Metzger, deputy chief of staff for administration at the office of the Vice President, thanked the National Lottery Authority for the gesture, describing it as a first step to ensure an improved livelihood of disabled people in Liberia. Dr. Metzger expressed hope for a continuous partnership and collaboration with the National Lottery Authority and other philanthropic institutions in Liberia. Dr. Metzger concluded his remarks by assuring the NLA that the distribution and exercise will be accountable and will be used for the intended purpose. The “Group of 77” was established in 1977 to cater to the needs of the less fortunate citizens of Liberia. The organization is administered by the Office of the Vice President of Liberia, and its executive director is the spouse of the vice president.
