Liberia: Memorial Games in Honor of Henry N. Browne

The late Henry N. Browne

In honor of the home-going of Mr. Henry Nyema Browne (HB), the Coaches Association of Liberia, in collaboration with the Liberia Football Association and Liberia Black Star, will organize a one-day sport event featuring organizations/teams Coach Browne is associated with.

The games will be played on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.

The twelve teams expected to participate are NPA Veteran, BUSA Veteran, Under 13 Veteran, CPA, Stella Maris Polytechnic, Cathedral High School Veteran, LFA, Coaches Association of Liberia, Former Players Association, Medic Association, Liberia Referee Association, and Liberia Black Star.

Coach Browne was a successful coach at Cathedral High School. At Cathedral, he achieved one of the greatest feats in the annals of the institution by guiding and leading a team of young, talented, and focused students/players to clinch the 1985 National High School Football Championship.

During the 1985 tournament, Cathedral High School defeated Wells Hairston High School (predominantly national team players) in the semi-final to advance to the finals.

And in the finals, Cathedral defeated Booker Washington Institute (BWI) from Kakata to win the 1985 High School Championship.

Cathedral High School provided the launchpad for most of the players on the school’s soccer team that later went on to advance their athletic skills, including Kelvin Sebwe (Liberia Black Star, Lone Star, and former pro), Jerry Kandakai (Cedar United), Owusu Korboi (Liberia Black Star and St. Joseph Warriors), Teddy Badio (Liberia Black Star and Mighty Barrolle), Ledgerhood Rennie (Liberia Black Star), Moses Ochichi (LPRC Oilers), Emmanuel Sharpe (Liberia Black Star), and Dionysius Sebwe (Liberia Black Star, Lone Star, and former pro).

Other players, including Benedict Sugbe, Beyan Harris, Frederick Moses, Johnson Baysahwala, et al, were integral to the overall success of the 1985 championship team.

Mr. Browne served as Technical Director of the LFA and Coach of Liberia Black Star FC (1989 - 2003).

He also served as President of Liberia Black Star, along with T. Max Jlateh as vice president, from 1991 - 1992. Mr. Henry Nyema Browne died on July 11, 2023.
