The 2012 ECOWAS tournament will kick off today, April 2, and end Thursday, Arpil 5, in Yamoussokro, Ivory Coast.
Over the weekend, a 22-man Liberian Track and Field National team departed the country for Ivory Coast to participate in the annual ECOWAS Tournament.
The delegation, comprising 18 athletes and 4 officials, left Liberia for Yamoussokro, Ivory Coast’s second largest city, where the games will take place.
The delegation is headed by internationally-trained athletics coach, Kesselee Kanneh. Coaches Ben Freeman and Fred Bass Golokeh, Jr., also traveled with the team, as did medic Morris Dukuly.
Notable athletes on the team are Nair Jensen, 200-meter reigning champion, Bladee Jarry, the 100-meter’s fastest legs, and women’s 1500-meter champ, Lucy Massaquoi.
The Sierra Leoneans, who stopped over one night in Monrovia in transit to the Ivory Coast, took off Thursday evening to celebrate their participation.
Athletes from Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Burkina Faso and the rest of the West African states are expected to have arrived in Ivory Coast for the kick-off the ECOWAS Games today.
