Most mothers have compassion for their children and other children. That is why they expend so much energies, time, and resources in caring for the little ones who initially are totally dependent on others for survival and development. Mothers are special for many good reasons.
Generally a mother understands her child more than any other person. There is such a close relationship between a child and mother that a mother’s love is very had to replace. Other people may give money and other forms of support but a true mother’s love surpasses all. When no one else understands you, your mother likely does! This goes of course beyond being a biological to being a true mother to any child that one really loves.
Mothers, please try your best, God Almighty being your helper, to be good mothers to your children and other children. Your significant role as a mother can make or break a family, a community and a nation. Many of our national and social problems can be traced to a lack of motherly care and instilling of life-time values such as the fear of God, respect for others, honesty, hard work, sharing some of whatever one is blessed with in our children. It is not easy to be a good mother but you have no choice to do otherwise. Your role is divinely given for the good of all human existence. The sacrifice of being a good mother is worth it because the world needs you as a mother and depends on you.
Godly mothers spend quality time with their children. They show them in deeds and words what it means to love and care for the other. They also correct and discipline their children in a loving way when they go wrong or show sign of going the wrong way. Love without discipline and truth telling is hypocrisy. But truth and discipline without love is brutality as one British monk once noted. Every child needs both love and discipline to be fully human. Failure to be a mother that one was meant to be is tragic for the family, community, nation and the world.
Sadly there are many mothers in our society today who are not prepared for getting into motherhood. There are children having children. They lack the mental, emotional, financial and physical capacities to take care of children. The Liberian civil war and its aftermath have contributed to this unfortunate situation. There are mothers who themselves need nurturing and training and yet are expected to give what they do not have!
Some of our mothers are grossly negligent. They abandon their children for pleasure and other pursuits. Their children are left unattended or are left with people who are unable to protect and give them the attention they need. There have been instances where little children were burnt to death while they mothers were out at entertainment places late in the night! Motherhood is a serious responsibility that requires that a mother be responsible.
Another common failure of some mothers is the lack of being role models to their children. Mothers dress badly, get drunk, tell lies before their children and engage in other dishonest acts and even encourage their children to participate with them in these their immoral acts. Good mothers set positive examples for their children and try their best to protect them from evil influences. Some mothers are in the evil habit of buying grades for their children instead of helping them to develop good study discipline that will serve them for the rest of their lives including the kind of discipline working life requires.
The remedy to all this is to realize that parenting is not something to rush into. It needs careful thought and preparing for it. And those who take it on must be willing to give it their best and depend on divine resources and guidance. With God and those who are willing to cooperate with him all things are possible.
